Brooding

by Richard Dinges

Chicken squats in
coop corner, lays
an egg, raises
her feathered skirts
to reveal her
barren nest to me.
Her purpose today,
like mine, lies in
feed and water,
a day under
clear skies, to find
something to eat,
satisfaction in
nourishment, not
to brood on what
will not be.
