Key from Poland
By John J. McKernan

My neighbor gave this rusted metal to me
A gift after his last trip to Europe

Strange blue metal
Blade scorched green
Teeth chipped & cracked

From a building He told me
Which survived
World War One

& World War Two

The Communists
Owned it first
Then the National Socialists
Then a pawn broker
Look what you own in the scheme of history

I keep it in the kitchen window
Pointed due east
To absorb lots of sunlight
Each day I touch it once and think
Go bury this key...Jack
Deep in the compost heap
